About Me

Hello, my name is Malena and I am here today to tell you about myself. I play multiple sports including volleyball, running, and swimming. I like volleyball because it involves a lot of action and is really unlimited on what you can do. You can be very creative. I like running because it's just something that I naturally like to do. I am in Cross Country as well. Finally, I like swimming because once again, it can involve a lot of creativity and it is fun. Some of my hobbies include filming because once again I can spread my creativity. Because of my filming passion I am in ISWAT which is a club where we work with technology and stuff of that sort. I am also in OAV which is a club where we work in the community involving diffrent projects. Another club I am in, is NJHS, National Junior Honor Society. We work on different projects to help multiple organizations.

Blog Nineteen: Intro Poetry Reflection

1. I believe that a poem should have a deep meaning and expresses feeling. A poem should also have figurative language and either a character, plot or setting

2. I believe a poem should not include bad grammar, useless information and NO copying someone's poem

3. The poems written by William Williams are very simple and actually I think require more knowledge because you need to get a better understanding of what the author is actually saying. The poem written by Anne Bradstreet seemed more straight forward and I already understood what was going on in the situation.

4. Both poems are similar because they both are written in stanzas, both contain literary elements such as plot, characters and setting. They also both contain figurative language.

Blog Eighteen: About My Father, Jackie Robinson

1. I think Sharon Robinson wrote this article because she wanted to express what her father went through and the struggles he had to face. I think his daughter wanted to show how Jackie changed the face of America, baseball and the community in general.

2. The main idea of the article is to show Jackie Robinson's life and how determined he was to become a baseball player. It shows the struggle and pain Jackie had to to go through.
The article is more than just someone becoming a baseball player. I found evidence for my answer on paragraph 10, from the beginning to the end.

3. The "color barrier" was mainly the fact the blacks and any one colored and whites were separated. Because of the color barrier there were only whites on the major league baseball and blacks weren't allowed to interact with the whites at specific times. Branch Rickey was known for breaking the "color barrier" in Major League Baseball.

4. Rickey needed to know Jackie Robinson's college statistics for multiple reasons. Rickey found out that Jackie was the leading basketball score in the conference and the national champion in the long jump and also and All-American halfback in football. I found all of this information on paragraph 7, from the beginning to the end.

5. Jackie Robinson had to have strength to "turn the cheek" and overcome the meanness of everyone. He had to have mental and psychical strength. For example, on paragraph 9, Rickey acted out "a racist fan shouting angry insults."

6. According to paragraph 10, the article states, "Today, Major League Baseball players come from around the world and and continue to break barriers of culture, language, race and religion." Because of Jackie Robinson, the world saw that people of all race and religion can do anything a white man can do. We are all the same.

Blog Seventeen: 42 Reflection

According to the dictionary, discrimination is, "the unjust or prejudicial of different categories of people or things." I believe the no one should ever be considered in a "category" excuse of their race or religion. In life, people should have equal opportunities in education and life. I believe the discrimination is when you are being automatically put into a specific group because of your race and religion. This can cause people to make fun of your and can even affect specific everyday tasks.
Years ago, my father grew up in Serbia, Europe. He stayed there for exactly three years and then my grandparents decided to move to America, where my grandpa's sister was staying. My grandparents, my father, my uncle and my grandpas wife and husband all lived in a small house. One day my grandparents afforded to by a house in Berwyn next to Hiawatha. My father became going to school there and didn't no any English. People made fun of him because of his name and the way he talked and the language he talked. People called him louie pooy. Later in life he became successful.

Blog Sixteen: Dignity

Where is there dignity in silence? One time, I got in a disagreement with my mom. My mom kept telling me how I was wrong and how I shouldn't have done what I did but in my opinion I was right. I didn't want to lie. I listened to my mom but then talked back because... the first amendment, freedom of SPEECH. I then, got in trouble. I think, if I had stayed quiet then my mom would of given me more respect.

The story is going to be the first time my flight was cancelled...

We were flying to Argentina but not a direct flight. So basically, we flew to New Jersey and then from New Jersey to Argentina. So according to our tickets our flight was going to take off in a few minutes. My mom, dad, sister and me were waiting. So the airport announced the our flight might not be taking of because the plane was slightly damaged. An hour past and we were still waiting. Finally, the airplane crew let us actually board the plane but it was TERRIBLE. There was NO air-conditioning and everyone was crammed together because no one wanted to sit. Later, there was more drama with my family and after hours the plane announced that we weren't going to take off. I grabbed my small bag and then we went to a specific part of the airport to get our hotel, which was provided by the airline. We then got our hotel and in New Jersey. The hotel was beautiful and huge with indoor fountains and stuff of that sort but since it was the middle of the night we didn't have time to explore but go to sleep because tomorrow, we were going to have to experience hours of flying. The was the first time my flight was cancelled.

Today, I'm going to write about my sister. My sister is unpredictable. She might be the happiest person on the face of the planet and then literally five minutes later she acts as if we have been mad for years! I swear... sometimes I think she's bipolar but when my sister is happy and nice... she's the funniest person around! She makes random jokes and we have SO MANY INSIDE JOKES. Like, I'll say one word and we'll both start laughing.

It all started during 4th grade. I meet Princess and we became best friends. Everyday after school, she'd come over, we told each other everything and we were always partners for group projects but at the end of 4th grade she told me she had to move. Even when she moved, she would always come over but at the beginning of 6th grade we didn't talk to each and moved on.

Blog Fifteen: Thinking

1. There are many parts of the Giver that I find interesting but I mainly think about the community. Now wait! The community is NOT fascinating but the fact that people can create Sameness and have it be "successful,"that fascinates me. Now there are people in the world who use there power for bad instead of good but still how does someone get that power? Also, Jonas (the main character) is pretty interesting. Like why would he want to go to Elsewhere, where did he get an idea that there was Elsewhere.

2. I am reading the Hunger Games and what I find interesting is the main character Katniss. She is so kind and brave to volunteer for her sister. If me sister were to be called, I'd be like, "Be safe and have a wonderful time," with the biggest possible smile I could ever make. Just kidding...

3. I don't like the ending of The Giver. The book was so interesting and exciting... I was really looking forward to the ending and then boom, out of nowhere the ending was terrible. I understand that there is another book but really? I want this book to be good. Another, thing that bothers me is Asher. After the situation with when Jonas told him to stop playing war Asher was so different.

4. So far, in the book I like everything. I've only read a bit but I am looking forward to the ending and lets hope the ending is good.

I practically live in my sweatpants... I forgot where I got them so I can't show a picture...

Blog Thirteen: Alternate Ending

1. Jonas and Gabriel were cold and tired. Gabriel was getting weaker. How did Jonas find the strength to move on? Jonas used the little memory of sunshine to warm Gabriel and himself for a quick second. Later on the continued the process.

2. What result did Jonas brief encounter with sunshine have on him? The brief encounter with sunshine warmed Jonas and Gabriel. Without the sunshine they currently would be dead because they would freeze to death.

3. Jonas "was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and that they were waiting too for the baby." Why was Jonas so certain? I feel like throughout the whole story Jonas was usually positive and never let negativity takeover. Jonas let his imagination takeover and started imagining music and color.
_____________________________________________________________________________

I stared into the distance. There was a town with river. I glanced and Gabriel who was asleep in my arms. About a mile or two ago the front wheel on my bike popped which made me walk. It was getting dark now and I needed to find a place to stay. The woods are clearing up and a dirt path has brought me to where I am now. I smiled but was too weak to show my excitement. Finally, the place I've been dreaming of. The place where you make your own decisions. A new world. I dragged my feet on the floor, trying as quickly as possible to meet the people of what we call Elsewhere. I made my way to the river. The soft splashes of the river brought back so many memories of home. Gabriel woke up and we both listened to the quiet water as I crossed the bridge. The town looked similar... all of it. To the right was a recreation center and homes on the left. Right then I heard a familiar voice.
"It will be all right," the voice said, "It is just pain."
I tried looking at the figure with the voice but the darkness of the night sky only allowed me to see a shadow. The man seemed to comfort a little boy and then the man pointed to a house in the distance. "Get some rest" the man whispered.
The little boy scurried to his house. Gabriel whimpered.
"Shh..." I said.
Right then the old man turned and I realized it was The Giver. I ran out of the shadows, placed Gabriel on the floor and hugged The Giver. There was nothing but silence and The Giver automatically knew it was me.
While hugging The Giver, I had a thought. Why is The Giver here... in Elsewhere? Did he know about Elsewhere but didn't tell me?
"Why did you come back," The Giver said, "it is not safe here."
Right then it hit me. There is no Elsewhere. I am back to my community, the same community. I slowly let go of The Giver.
"Are they still looking for me?" I asked The Giver nervously.
He stayed silent, "Jonas, they think you are gone... if they find you who knows what will happen," The Giver whispered, "you must go back." I picked up Gabriel, worrying that be might crawl away. Gabriel seemed to notice where he was and smiled but I was too sad to worry about Gabriel. All my hopes and dreams of Elsewhere were gone. Vanished. I wanted to cry and to go home to my fake parents who didn't even love me. I wanted to see Lily, see how much she has grown. The whole community is a fake but then again comforting at times like this. The Giver stood there, respecting my thoughts and silence.
Gabriel then placed his small hand on my cheek and said, "Jonas."
He interuptted my thoughts but in a good way. Right then, a few people started walking towards The Giver.
"You must run," The Giver said, "search for Elsewhere again." For the first time I had no confidence in Elsewhere.
I held Gabriel tight as I ran towards the bridge. Gabriel whimpered reaching his hands towards the community. "Home," he cried, "home." I looked Gabriel and then back at The Giver. Gabriel didn't need this pressure in his life. He didn't deserve to suffer.  I glanced at The Giver, pointed at Gabriel. The Giver understood and nodded in return. I placed Gabriel on the floor, knowing that I'd be putting his life in risk. I was going to leave Gabriel by the river and later when The Giver was done helping the people he'd come and pick up Gabriel. Over time, Gabriel has toughen and maybe the community might reconsider if Gabriel would be released. I waved at Gabriel and walked away. "Bye," I whispered, "bye, bye little guy." I ran away. This time I decided to go in a different direction. The path looked unfamiliar and all I could he was the sound of my feet hitting the pavement. In the distance I heard Gabriel's soft giggles and can tell The Giver picked him up. Who knows what will happen to Gabriel. Maybe Gabriel will get released but one things for sure... it is better then him dyeing in the wild. I closed my eyes and hoped the The Giver and Gabriel will be okay. They were really the only people that I cared about. I even hoped the Asher and Fiona would be safe and my parents. Even Lily who would probably grow up and become a Nurturer. Someday she will know the truth... but she won't tell. She can't tell. No one in the community has ever been strong enough to stand up for themselves and try to make a difference. Not even me. But I hope Gabriel can. I know Gabriel can. I feel it.

Blog Thirteen: "Famous" Question

Which would you rather choose, "Be famous but forgotten when you die" or "be forgotten but remembered when you die." I would rather be forgotten and then remembered when I die, for multiple reasons. Well, to be honest I just think that being remembered after I die is more important then if I was remembered when I was alive. People can remember my work and they'll be curious of I was has person. This obviously, is a personal opinion.

March Madness- Blog #4

I sad to say that no one fascinates me. Here and there someone does something that "fascinates" me but there is no one I look up to. I just prefer not to have someone inspire me. I usually get inspired by places or things but a person will never fascinate me. What the person does might fascinate me.

Blog Eleven: Reaction to Release

We recently, just read chapters 18 and 19 in "The Giver" and I have to say that they were intense... very intense. I wasn't electing that when you get realized you are actually being killed! What society even does that? Why can't people in the society naturally die? I just have so many questions. At the beginning of the book i though something was wrong with the society but now after reading these two chapters I totally disagree with what the society is trying to do. I still understand the society and respect their "goal" but when it comes to killing someone that when you have crossed the line.

I only have two major fears...

1. Atychiphobia (Fear of failing in general and in life)

2. Enosiophobia (Fear of criticism)

I am not really scared of criticism but why would I get criticism when something is good and if i get criticism that means something is NOT good which means I "failed" (see how the two connect?)

Blog Ten: Understanding

In the book "The Giver" the POV (point of view) is from Jonas. Now imagine if the POV wasn't from Jonas but instead from Lily or his mother. How would the story be then? I think the fact the Jonas is the main character really make story exciting. Without his point of view we wouldn't know a lot of information. Jonas knows way more stuff than his mother, father and everyone in the community in general. I feel like without Jonas the storyline would be pretty boring.

Blog Nine: Imagine

In the song "Imagine" by John Lennon, the singer is trying to explain and imagine a world where everything is perfect. A world where no one has to be greedy or suffer from hunger. A world where everyone is the same, no religion and beliefs. This of course if not true in our current day society but in "The Giver" this is how life is. Everyone is the same, no religion, no hunger, no need to be greedy.

Blog Eight: Freedom

Freedom. We are so lucky to have freedom (according to the Preamble) in America. Sometimes there are things that challenge us and supports us to have freedom. For example, sometimes terrorists, threaten our freedom. Other countries might be jealous and do something that will affect us. Also, certain groups can affect our freedom. These are just a few examples of cons but what about pros? Well, sometimes we help other countries, which can help them have a better perspective of us.
In our groups today we read about Gun Control. I think we need gun control, other people don't want gun control. I think we need gun control because according to the article, recently in the USA there, have been lots of gun problems and shootings. From what I have above, sometimes I feel that we have no much freedom. If the government says something that is 100% we should agree with it. Maybe we can have gun control but monthly checks and a visit to the owners property. In "The Giver" everyone already has freedom. Everything is perfect. There freedom is being able to live mainly (not to be released). Then again, if you really think about it they DON'T have much freedom. In Jonas society, everything is controlled.

Blog Seven: Jonas POV Change

Throughout, "The Giver" Jonas POV (Point Of View) changes. In Jonas community people don't experience many things but since Jonas has become the Receiver of Memory he will need to receive certain memories that NO ONE has experienced. This has changed the way he thinks of his community and problems/struggles. For example, on page 83, chapter 11, Jonas says, "It hurt a lot... but I'm glad you gave it to me. It was interesting. And now I understand better, what it meant, that there would be pain." This proves that Jonas knows that there will be some struggles that he has NEVER experienced or faced.

Blog Six: Just a Memory

In the book, "The Giver" there are NO chapter names so for a blog we were suppose to pick a chapter and give it a title. So far in "The Giver" I had read 10 chapters and chapter 10 was probably my favorite.

So I decided to name that chapter... "Just a Memory" because chapter 10 is about bringing back memories of things no one saw but memories being past down.

Blog Five: Choices, choices

I personally, would rather live in a world where you have the freedom to make your own choices.
There are multiple reasons why I like this topic, “rather live in a world where you have the freedom to make your own choices” than, “one where your choices are made for you.” I have three main reasons why I believe this is a better option. Number one; we learn from our mistakes by many ways. One including, making decisions and choices. If the society controlled our choices, they would always choice the right one. Number two; making choices is a skill (personal opinion). Has you get older you should know what is right and what is wrong. If you want to get better at something you practice and without practicing your chances of improving the skill decreases. Lastly, number three. There are many things that define your personality, one including your choices. Without, making choices people wouldn’t really have independence. These are my three main reasons.

There are pros and cons of both topics and although, “one where your choices are made for you” might be an easier choice, “you have the freedom to make your own choices” will build person independence and improve their skill of decisions.  “One where your choices are made for you” only let’s people slack off.

Blog Four Unity through Conformity

The society analyzes everyone everyone and studies their behavior. When you get paired up with a significant other, your personality is similar, you both have similar interests. sometimes I feel the society is making up people. Sometimes I feel the society is making up people. When everyone one is "perfect"... everyone is similar.

Blog Three: What If?

History. I love history and learning about historical events but imagine if we didn't have history or any record of it. How would life be? One thing is for sure we would constantly be making mistakes, big ones and small ones. We learn from our past... without knowing our history we wouldn't learn. For example, throughout history we have improved with technology. Without past inventions we wounded know what to work and improve. knowledge of the world is important. Today in class we discussed about this topic. Sometimes I disagreed with people but mainly I was questioning. In the discussion my views didn't really change but I did question myself here and there. People said a few things but nothing to change my opinion.

Blog Two: Two Worlds Collide

SIMILARITIES:

• Parents/Siblings
• Jobs
• School
• Volunteer hours

DIFFERENCES:

• Jobs (such as Birthmother)
• Family Units
• Can't have stirring dreams; must take pills
• No animals

So, our world and Jonas world are really different but one thing is for sure I would rather live in this world for many reasons. Here they are below...

• We have animals, in Jonas world there are none
• You can be released in Jonas world, not in this world

Blog One

There are many pros and cons when it comes to someone picking your job for you. Has of for some of the pros according to "The Giver" people watch you see what you are interested in. Maybe these certain people notice something that you do, that you never though you liked.
One con is that maybe you like it for a certain period of time and then get sick of it. Also, you have to constantly know that you can't have any say or give any ideas.
According to "The Giver" you receive a job when you are twelve years old. This is not good in my opinion because when you are twelve you are still very young and like to hang out with your friends. You are responsible for small jobs, like chores but in reality you still shouldn't have a job. You won't have any fun time.
